AIM for Healthy Kids

Due to the increasing number of children in the city of St. Louis diagnosed with asthma, Healthy Kids Express implemented an Asthma Intervention Model program in St. Louis public schools. Working in cooperation with school administrators, school nurses, students and parents, health care professionals provide asthma management free of charge directly at the schools. Asthma management includes exams by a nurse practitioner that include Spirometry, which is a special test to measure lung function. Children are offered flu shotsand asthma equipment such as Peak Flow Meters and Aerochambers. Individualized Asthma Action plans are devised, and the program has partnered with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America to provide all students enrolled with allergy proof mattress and pillow encasements. Having the asthma program in the schools decreases barriers to care, heightens asthma awaremess, and helps kids with asthma stay well.

The current program offers 1:1 and group education to parents, teachers and students at the school. The program is equipped with a social worker who links families in need of assistance to appropriate community resources. This year the program will offer a traveling Asthma Carnival to various community events and participate in delivering educational sessions to parents in the community in partnership with the hospital's ACE (Asthma Community Education) classes.
