Debunking Diaper Rash
Despite a parent’s best intentions, babies are still vulnerable to diaper rash.
Diaper rash is a broad category of dermatitis (skin inflammation) caused by a chemical irritation of the skin where it comes into contact with a moistened or soiled diaper. Symptoms of diaper rash generally include:
- Bright red areas or red patches on the skin
- Red bumps, pimples or spots
- Red scaly areas on the genital area
Severe cases of diaper rash may also cause open sores or ulcers on the skin.
Prevention and Treatment
While diaper rash is unavoidable at times, there are steps you can take to help prevent and treat the condition.
“If your child’s skin looks irritated, stop using baby wipes,” says Terri Tessmer, RN, BSN, Answer Line nurse at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “Instead, use plenty of warm water to wash off skin. If stool is present, use a mild soap, too.”
The goal is to keep baby’s bottom dry and clean.
Other tips include:
- Change diapers frequently.
- Keep diapers loose so air can circulate.
- Use a barrier cream to help sooth rash and be sure you wash the diaper area with warm water between uses.
If the rash does not improve within three or four days, spreads to other parts of the body, is accompanied by open or pus-filled sores, or your child also develops a fever, contact your pediatrician.
