Put Safety First This Summer
When you’re planning a fun family activity or vacation this summer, remember to prepare for unexpected emergencies.
Keeping a first-aid kit at home, in the car and even on a boat can be extremely beneficial, especially if you have small children. Scrapes, stings and other injuries can be treated immediately and can save time while allowing your family to continue enjoying summer activities.
“Everyone should personalize their first-aid kit based on where they are and what they will be doing,” says Susan Bowles, RN, community education instructor at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “For example, if you’re going to the beach, you may want to pack an ointment in case of a possible jellyfish sting. If you’ll be hiking, include a snakebite kit.”
What’s in Your First-Aid Kit?
If you’re thinking of putting together a first-aid kit for your family, remember to include these must-have items:
- Band-Aids®
- Gauze
- Plain, unscented soap
- Roll of tape
- Scissors
- Triple antibiotic ointment
- Wrapping bandages
If you’re looking for a place to store your first-aid kit, the kitchen or the bathroom may be convenient. However, it is important to keep the kit out of reach of young children.
A Safe Safari
Every Thursday from April 1 to November 1, St. Louis Children’s Hospital offers Zoo Days, a free first-aid kit activity at the Saint Louis Zoo for children and their families. The children are given the opportunity to make a first-aid kit, and basic first-aid information is offered.
“We help kids make small first-aid kits with Band-Aids, triple antibiotic ointment and antiseptic packs,” says Bowles. “This activity helps children understand the benefits of a first-aid kit while they explore the Zoo.”
