A Message from the Vice President of Patient Care

I am Peggy Gordin, RN, MS, NEA-BC, FAAN, Vice President of Patient Care Services at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. I came to this hospital in June 2008 from Philadelphia because I wanted to be part of a great children’s hospital that is focused on continuously improving the quality of care for children and their families. I could see that nurses are treated as a valued and equal member of the health care team here, and that the staff provide a warm, caring and compassionate environment for families and co-workers.

As a member of the hospital’s executive staff, I believe it is extremely important for me to be visible to our nursing team and to gain an understanding of the challenges they face daily. To accomplish this goal, I shadow nurses and other employees in each of our departments and attend individual departmental staff meetings. I also join my fellow executive team members in regular “town hall” staff meetings and rounds on units to ensure an environment focused on improving care.

In 2005, the hospital was awarded the prestigious Magnet designation for excellence in nursing. This honor was achieved through the dedication and commitment of all of our staff as well as through the continuous pursuit of the highest professional nursing standards.

Nurses at St. Louis Children’s Hospital are an essential part of the decision making process as demonstrated through their leadership and participation in our shared governance model. Our Nursing Councils focus on research, education, clinical practice and professional development. In addition, our vast number of Advanced Practice Nurses have a Council devoted to addressing their unique practice issues and needs.

Becoming a Magnet nurse at St. Louis Children’s Hospital can be extremely rewarding. We have a fast-paced practice environment that is challenging and fulfilling.
