Description of Unit
The Procedure Center (APC) provides family-focused care for inpatient and outpatient procedures which may or may not require sedation or general anesthesia. The eleven-bed unit focuses on providing safe, effective RN monitored sedation and recovery.
The APC is staffed by 24 full and part time RNs, 1 Nurse Clinician, 1 LPN, 3 Peri-operative techs, and 1 Secretary/Scheduler. The staff deliver overall care focusing on the physical as well as psychological needs of the patient and family for radiology exams as well as sedated and non-sedated procedures for services such as Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Pulmonary.
The APC has a sub-group, Vascular Access. These Nurses function under a separate yet collaborative scope of service which includes the goal of providing state of the art, efficient, cost-effective vascular access for every patient at SLCH. There are 12 Vascular Access Nurses.
Procedural care provides preparation beginning with a detailed and thorough screening phone call by a sedation experienced Phone RN to help determine appropriate sedation type. Education and expert care continues with patients and their families on their arrival to the APC, during the procedure and the recovery phase. A follow up phone call is made to check on status 24-48 hours after their APC visit.
Patient PopulationThe population of this unit range from newborns through age twenty-one. Patients in the APC include Gastroenterology disorders, Post-Lung, Heart, Kidney, Liver and Bone Marrow Transplants, Seizures and many more.
