Faculty Update: Duncan Named Medical Director, Vascular Access

James R. Duncan, MD, PhD, has been appointed the first medical director of vascular access at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) by F. Sessions Cole, MD, the hospital’s chief medical officer, and by Peggy Gordin, MS, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, vice president of Patient Care Services. Dr. Duncan is an interventional radiologist with Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) and an associate professor of radiology and surgery at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM).

In his new role, Dr. Duncan will work closely with the skilled nursing staff of the Vascular Access Team to ensure the highest standards for all forms of vascular access, to monitor quality and safety of vascular access catheters and procedures, and to develop new approaches to successful placement and maintenance of vascular access for all children at SLCH.

“Since joining the School of Medicine faculty, Jim has been a tireless advocate for improving methods for vascular access and has been a champion of patient safety,” says Dr. Cole.

Dr. Duncan also serves as director of pediatric interventional radiology at SLCH, overseeing the hospital’s new, $3.6 million pediatric interventional radiology suite. He received his MD and PhD degrees from WUSM and completed his residency and fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at MIR.
