Float pool team is trained to provide family centered care throughout multiple units at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Our goal is to assist the hospital to fill staffing needs to each unit as assessed on a shift to shift basis.
Family centered care is provided by float pool team members. Families are respected as the child’s primary care givers and essential participants in decisions that impact the healing of the child. Our dedication to family centered care focuses on the strengths of both the child and family with an appreciation of the diversity of each individual family unit, recognizing that the family is the child’ s primary source of strength and support. Our goal is to provide an environment for safe, effective, twenty-four hour nursing care to pediatric patients, emphasizing the restoration of their maximum state of health and wellness, along with the prevention of illness and injury.
Patient Population
With a continual change in census and acuity throughout the hospital, the float pool staff is flexible and prepared to provide care to a wide variety of patients. Our team floats to the following units the EU, NICU, PICU, CICU, 7E, 7W, 8E, 8W, 9W, 10, and 12W.

Opportunities in the Float Pool consist of full-time, part-time, prn, per diem and weekend option. One innovative new opportunity is the New Graduate Internship Program. The purpose of the internship is to further expand the Float Pool by hiring graduate nurses and providing an extensive orientation with preceptors on seven specialty care units. For the next eight months, employees will float between the seven inpatient units based on the needs identified for each shift. At the completion of the first year in the internship, employees will continue with critical care orientation (PICU, CICU, NICU and EU) preparing them to float throughout the entire nursing division.
