The goal of the care team is to provide family centered care.Families are respected as the child’s primary care givers and essential participants in decisions that impact the healing of the child. Our dedication to family centered care focuses on the strengths of both the child and family with an appreciation of the diversity of each individual family unit, recognizing that the family is the child’s primary source of strength and support.
Patient Population
8-West is a 20 bed unit that provides quality care to patients witha variety of diagnosis including respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal diseases and renal diseases. Five isolation rooms are capable of providing reverse airflow for the care of children with airborne disease. Our goal is to provide an environment for safe, effective, twenty-four hour nursing care to pediatric medicine patients, emphasizing the restoration of their maximum state of health and wellness, along with the prevention of illness and injury.

The day to day operation of the unit is facilitated by the charge nurses. Charge nurses are registered nurses who demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, clinical expertise, a commitment to the pediatric patient population we serve, and the ability to deliver quality patient care. The charge nursehelps to make sure there are enough nurses and suport staff on each shift to take care of the patients.They are also the key to open communications between the medical staff, nursing staff, patients and their families as well as ancillary departments involved in patient’s care. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, patient care associates and a unit secretary.
8-West Leadership
The 8-West manager and assistant managers are responsible for the overall operation of the unit. Additional supoort is provided by the Clinical Educator and Advance Practice Nruses. Physician leadership is provided by teh unit based joint practice team leader.
Education
All of the staff members on 8 west attend a mandatory General Medicine Education Day.
The topics vary according to the needs of the staff. Education and discussions are facilitated by experts. Staff members are encouraged to attend educational offerings, both within the hospital as well as outside offerings, and to share their knowledge with coworkers.
Nursing Achievements
8 west has 6 RN’s with Pediatric Nurse Certification, 18 with BSN’s. 8 west encourages others to continue their formal education in order to persue professional goals.
8 west has 5 RN’s that are PALS certified and 4 RN’s that are PEARS certified.
