The mission of 8 East ( General Medicine II ) is to provide an environment for safe, effective, twenty four hour nursing care to pediatric medicine patients, emphasizing the restoration of their maximum state of health and wellness, along with the prevention of illness and injury.
Health care is provided in a family centered care milieu, in which families are respected as the child’s primary care givers and essential participants in decisions that impact the healing of the child. Our dedication to family centered care focuses on the strengths of both the child and family with an appreciation of the diversity of each individual family unit, recognizing that the family is the child’ s primary source of strength and support.
Patient Population
A variety of patient are cared for on 8 East, both male and female patients from newborn through age twenty one. Primary diagnoses include asthma, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, sepsis, and other infectious diseases, including R.S.V. and a large population of patients with pulmonary diseases including cystic fibrosis.

The day to day operation of the unit, with a bed capacity of twenty-five, is facilitated by the charge nurses. Charge nurses are registered nurses who demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, clinical expertise, a commitment to the pediatric patient population we serve, and the ability to deliver quality patient care. Advanced Practice Nurses assume responsibility for the care of a specific group of patients diagnosed with asthma through a collaborative practice agreement. The unit is staffed with registered nurses who have successfully completed both their general pediatric orientation as well as unit specific orientation. Patient care associates and a unit secretary provide additional levels of patient support services under the supervision of the charge nurse and the other registered nurses on the unit. The house staff assistant supports the physicians and nurses by arranging care for the child after hospitalization.
8-East Leadership
The unit leadership team includes the vice president of family and child services, the director of pediatrics, the manager, the assistant manager, the physician service leader and physician team leader. The manager is a registered nurse who has a B.S.N. and a Master degree in Social Work. The assistant manager is a registered nurse with an exceptional level of clinical and leadership skills. Clinical leadership for the unit also includes Advanced Practice Nurses and a clinical educator.
