Hematology/Oncology (9 West)

9W is a 20 bed pediatric medical unit that also includes six Bone Marrow Transplant rooms with Hepa filters and positive pressure airflow capabilities. The unit provides an environment for safe, effective, twenty-four hour nursing care to pediatric patients with an emphasis on:

  • The restoration of patients’ maximum state of health and wellness
  • The prevention of illness and injury
  • Providing a teaching and supportive environment for patients and their families to meet their unique medical and psycho-social needs

9 West focuses on family-centered care, respecting family members as the child’s primary caregivers and essential participants in decision making. Family-centered care assists all members of the health care team in being sensitive and responsive to diversity across ethnic, geographic, age and economic lines as well as in meeting the unique needs of each child and family.

Patient Population

The population of this unit consists of patients from newborn through age twenty-one. Patients treated in this unit are diagnosed with/or are undergoing:

  • Cancer
  • Sickle cell
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Other blood disorders
  • Kidney transplant
  • Liver transplant

The unit provides individualized training for patients and their families on bone marrow transplants, kidney and liver transplants, cancer and other blood disorders. Patients’ chemotherapy regimens and education are performed by the multi-disciplinary team. A patient’s plan of care is reviewed and evaluated with each subsequent admission.

The day-to-day operation of the unit is facilitated by the charge nurses or the assistant nurse managers, who display leadership capabilities and clinical expertise.

Continuing Education

  • All newly hired nurses must complete a 12-hour training session to obtain chemotherapy certification, renewing yearly.
  • All staff nurses are required to have formal sedation training.
  • All staff nurses are required to attend an annual Kidney/Liver Transplant Educational offering.
