Patients originate from the Operating Room, the Emergency Unit, doctors’ offices, and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Many of our patients have undergone surgical procedures for congenital anomalies of systems such as respiratory, gastrointestinal, skeletal, craniofacial, and genitourinary. We also care for children who have suffered traumatic injuries.
St. Louis Childrens Hospital is recognized as a Burn Center by the American Burn Association. Activities related to burn care are coordinated and monitored by staff and resources of PAWS and the 10th floor. PAWS provides burn and wound care to both inpatient and outpatients, including dressing changes, wound debridement, whirlpool therapy, and physical/occupational therapy. If needed, sedation for wound care and therapies is provided by a sedation-trained pediatrician (hospitalist).

Continuing Education
All staff nurses on the 10th floor are required to attend an annual education/training day. Nurses are also required to complete a Pediatric Code Management class every 2 years. Nurses who work in the PAWS unit undergo specialized training in sedation and recovery. The 10th floor provides opportunities for staff to attend various annual conferences, including the ABA (American Burn Association) conference and the APSNA (American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association) conference.Several nurses and physicians are ABLS (Advanced Burn Life Support) certified. The team of caregivers on the 10th floor cares for inpatient surgical patients ranging in age from infant to young adult. Patients are admitted from the following surgical services:10E/W is a 30 bed inpatient pediatric surgical unit that also includes the Pediatric Acute Wound Service (PAWS). The overall care delivered provides for the physical as well as psychosocial needs of the patient and family. The unit honors the racial, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the families we serve. We recognize the family as essential nurturers, caregivers and participants in decisions that affect the total healing of the patient. We educate and share relevant information with patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful.
