St. Louis Children's Hospital offers nursing students an opportunity to gain experience in research or evidence-based practice projects while helping its staff to complete projects in a more timely fashion through its NS-RAP program.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- The NS-RAP program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
- The primary requirements are that the student be self-directed, mature and responsible.
- The student must be able to work independently with minimal direction.
- The student's GPA is expected to be 3.0 or better. (Students with lower GPAs may be considered with interview & references.)
- No prior coursework in research or evidence-based practice is required.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
- Students are accepted each semester (Fall - Spring - Summer) and devote approximately 3-4 hours/week to the program.
- Each school/instructor determines how students will earn credit for their experiences. Some ways previously used include: substitution of experience for written course expectations, senior synthesis clinical, and independent study.
- Students may choose to work on a research or evidence-based practice project. All students will receive mentoring throughout the experience.
- Students who choose to work with a nurse researcher will complete the institution-required human subjects course, which is self-paced & online so that participation in obtaining consent for a study, data collection, and data entry will be possible.
- There are also intermittent opportunities for literature reviews & critiques and involvement in qualitative study data collection and analysis.
