New Monthly Rounds to Focus on Compassionate Health Care

Clinicians now have a regularly scheduled time to openly and safely discuss the difficult social and emotional issues that arise in caring for patients. St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) is initiating the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center Rounds, a multidisciplinary forum for discussing complex patient issues.

Shortly before his death from lung cancer in September 1995, Kenneth B. Schwartz, a successful health care attorney in Boston, established an organization dedicated to strengthening the relationship between patient sand caregivers. The mission of the Schwartz Center is to support and advance compassionate health care in which caregivers, patients and their families relate to one another in a way that provides hope to the patient, support to caregivers and sustenance to the healing process. Schwartz Center Rounds are currently offered at 170 sites in 30 states.

“We encourage all caregivers working at Children’s Hospital to attend these monthly rounds,” says Peggy Gordin, RN, vice president of patient care services at SLCH. “It’s an excellent opportunity to discuss the emotional side of health care and share ideas.”

Parents’ Presence During a Code will be the topic at SLCH’s first Schwartz Center Rounds on Monday, September 21. Held in the 3rd floor auditorium at SLCH, it will begin at noon and lunch will be provided.

Beginning in October, Schwartz Center Rounds will be held on the fourth Monday of every month from noon – 1 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium.

Continuing medical education and nursing education credits are available.
