Medical Education
Continuing medical education includes the most up-to-date advances in pediatric health care presented through various symposia, lecture series, seminars and rounds. The affiliation between Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital provides knowledge of the latest in research and clinical expertise. Many education programs offer credit hours in category 1 of the latest in research and clinical expertise. Many education programs offer credit hours in category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the AMA.

Teleconferencing technology has helped broaden the outreach of SLCH’s educational programs, enabling physicians in outlying areas to receive pediatric CME through a PC-based system. An Internet-based system is under development to further increase access to programming.

All physicians are welcome to attend the programs of their choice and many are recorded and available on tape through the medical library:

  • Early Bird Rounds -- 8-9 a.m. Fridays, September though May; focus on problems encountered in daily practice
  • Grand Rounds/Visiting Professor Series -- 9:15-10:30 a.m., Fridays; faculty and visiting professors from across the country present the most current review of their area of expertise
  • Evening Seminars -- provide a comprehensive update on the evaluation and management of selected pediatric problems
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support -- a program designed for physicians, nurses and paramedics to discuss current advanced cardiac and trauma support of critically ill infants and children
  • Physician Outreach Programs -- groups of staff physicians regularly travel to communities in the region to discuss topics of interest to local physicians

Locum Tenens
The Locum Tenens program provides traditional, office-based locum tenens service to community pediatricians. Only pediatricians with private practice experience staff the program. These pediatricians have a special interest in working with physicians in the community to develop new collaborative programs that deliver pediatric health care to underserved areas. For information on the Locum Tenens program, please contact the Medical Staff office at 314.454.6088.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
PALS is a comprehensive two-day course that emphasizes early recognition of the child at high risk for cardiopulmonary arrest. Early intervention for the pediatric patient at risk of a cardiopulmonary arrest is stressed. The course teaches priorities and techniques that enable effective interventions and appropriate treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest. The provider course is required for original PALS certification and is valid for two years.
