At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, we strive to make children and their families as comfortable as possible.
Patient rooms are equipped with bathrooms, telephones, safes, color televisions and VCRs. Each room is designed to accommodate one parent per patient for overnight stays (intensive care units are an exception) with built-in window bay beds and chairs that extend into single beds. For your convenience, the hospital provides shower and laundry facilities for parents (please check with your child’s nurse). Towels, linens and pillows are available from your child’s nurse or the unit secretary. A laundromat is provided free of charge on the hospital lower level, room LN19.
Phones and Phone Cards
Local phone calls can be made from your child’s room. For long distance calls, parents of inpatients can stop by the second floor Guest Services Information Desk to pick up a complimentary 10-minute pre-paid phone card. One phone card will be issued each day to inpatient families and can be used at any phone in the hospital. Phones are located in all parent lounges throughout the hospital, as well as at each nurses station.
Cellular Telephones and Electrical Appliances
The use of cellular phones and two-way radios are allowed except in certain areas where a sign is posted stating "No cell phones."
Computers
Patient rooms are equipped with wireless Internet capability. Desktop computers are available in the Family Resource Center during business hours.
Meals
We offer several dining options for you and your child at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Every mealtime, a member of the Food and Nutrition Department will come to your floor with a meal cart. This meal cart offers a variety of food choices. At the time of each meal, your child is offered the opportunity to choose what he/she would like to eat from the meal cart. If we do not have what your child is interested in on the cart, please ask your server for assistance. We are sure we can find something in the kitchen that will make your child happy. Breakfast is served from 7:15 - 9 a.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 - 6 p.m.
In early 2009, we will begin a new service, Dining-On-Call Room Service Program, where patients may order their meals by phone and have them delivered at the time of their choosing.
If you have questions about your child’s diet and wish to speak to a registered dietitian, please ask your nurse or call 314.454.4249. The best hours to reach us are between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Each floor has a small variety of snacks available for your child including juices, milk, ice cream, cereal, soup, spaghetti and crackers. You may request these items from your child’s nurse. Also, let your nurse know if your child will be celebrating a birthday.
Television
Since patient rooms are equipped with a television and VCR, you’re welcome to bring your own videotapes from home. St. Louis Children’s Hospital provides age-appropriate television programs on our closed-circuit television system, which includes educational programming as well as the Disney Channel.
Balloons
St. Louis Children's Hospital is committed to ensuring a safe environment for patients and their families. Mylar (metallic) balloons are welcome and make a hospital room brighter and more colorful. Latex (rubber) balloons are prohibited. Such balloons are a choking hazard for young children and can cause allergic reactions for patients and staff. As a result, latex balloons are not allowed at the hospital for gifts and latex balloon deliveries will not be accepted. Thank you for your understanding.
