heart problems and
congenital heart disease or heart malfunction in children.
Conditions treated
Service highlights
- Nationally recognized as a leading pediatric heart transplantation center, performing 20-30 heart transplants each year.
- Offers a full array of diagnostic techniques, many of which are noninvasive and were either developed or perfected at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
- State-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) to care for the most critically ill cardiac patients. From newborns to young adults, the 12-bed unit provides every patient and family a private room.
The cardiology team regularly performs state-of-the-art noninvasive and minimally invasive tests and procedures including electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiography, cardiac catheterization and angiography, cryoablation, and more. Click here to learn more about these Tests and Procedures.
Surgical procedures performed by the
cardiothoracic surgery team range from the repair or palliation of all forms of congenital heart disease, including septal defects, to complex single ventricle repairs and
heart transplantation. In addition, our experts perform various procedures for the correction of lung, esophageal and chest wall abnormalities. These include both open surgical techniques as well as
minimally invasive endoscopic surgeries.
The division has an active Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program for neonates and children with cardiac and cardiopulmonary diseases. ECMO supports ventilation and circulation while the heart and lungs recover after surgery, or during the convalescence from serious illness. The machine used for ECMO is similar to the bypass equipment used during open-heart surgery.
Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)
VADs are used as a bridge to transplant by providing mechanical circulatory support. Surgeons at St. Louis Children's Hospital performed the first Berlin Hearrt procedure in Missouri.
The
outpatient clinic at St. Louis Children's Hospital is available through physician referral and appointment. Outpatient appointments are available at St. Louis Children's Hospital, Missouri Baptist Hospital in west St. Louis County, and at multiple satellite clinics across Missouri and southern Illinois.
