Emergency Medicine Ranked #4 in the Nation

Division Highlights

  • St. Louis Children's Hospital is a Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center.

  • The Dana Brown Emergency Department at St. Louis Children's Hospital stands apart from most emergency care because it is dedicated to treating the special needs of children with illnesses and injuries.

  • As a leader in pain management and sedation, every effort is taken to make children as comfortable as possible while being treated.

  • Parents are encouraged to help relieve a child's anxiety by staying with the child and taking an active role in their child's care whenever possible.

  • We receive approximately 58,000 visits annually, or 130-140 visits daily. Approximately 75 precent of these are urgent/emergent, and 20 percent are non-urgent.

The Dana Brown Emergency Unit offers a kid-friendly atmosphere

  • The division is comprised of 10 full time attending pediatric emergency physicians, three fellows, 12 pediatric nurse practitioners, 51 nurses, and pediatric residents of all levels. The medical staff evaluates all patients presenting for care, unless specifically referred to a medical or surgical subspecialist. Trauma care is initiated and often maintained by the emergency staff.

Services

The scope of services provided in the Emergency Department includes resuscitation and stabilization of critically ill and injured children, as well as the evaluation and treatment of all children seeking care on an unscheduled basis.

Each child who comes to the Emergency Department is provided with a complete continuum of care as professionals from various disciplines -- such as surgeons, radiologists, psychologists and social workers -- work together to fully assess and treat the child's needs.

Facility

The emergency unit faces Kingshighway at the corner of Children's Place, and provides patients with easy access and streamlined care in a state-of-the-art facility. It features two trauma rooms, 29 treatment rooms and five specialty treatment rooms.

The unit is 17,522 square feet and is equipped with semi-private treatment rooms. Each room is equipped with state-of-the-art, child-sized medical equipment and video cassette players that run orientation and informational tapes. An enlarged waiting area features a jungle theme and includes a train engine, salt-water aquarium and scenes depicting grasslands, coral reefs, mountainous terrain and rainforests.

Transportation

In many cases, transporting patients to the Emergency Department is handled by the St. Louis Children's Hospital Transport Team. The transport team can travel by ground ambulance, helicopter, or fixed-wing plane or jet -- depending on the distance and patient condition. The Transport Team also operates three Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs), which allow medical personnel to provide intensive care for patients while in transit to the hospital.

CARES Unit

Hours of Operation -- 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Monday through Friday, and noon to 11 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday

St. Louis Children's Hospital also provides emergent care for patients sent by referring physicians through the CARES unit. The doctors dedicated to the CARES program work in conjunction with the referring physicians to augment patient care after normal office hours.

Mission

The Emergency team strives to be a premier center in pediatric emergency medicine for the prevention and treatment of acute illness and injury in children through:

  • Provision of timely, courteous, and expert family-centered emergency care
  • Education which expands, discovers, and transmits knowledge relevant to the prevention and treatment of acute illness and injury
  • Development of strong, clinically relevant research which improves the health of children
  • Advocacy for the health of children in the communities served
