The pediatric hematology/oncology program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the largest comprehensive program for children with blood diseases or cancer in the region. We provide state of the art care for children of all ages in an environment that is uniquely designed for the pediatric patient. The expertise of the physicians of the Washington University School of Medicine combined with our comprehensive support services of our program results in an experience that will convey comfort and satisfaction for our familes.

Our program consolidates our services to one area of the hospital to provide easy accessibility for patients and families. The Hale Irwin Center for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at St. Louis Children's Hospital offers a comfortable, non-threatening space for children and their families to receive specialized care from a team of dedicated experts in treating hematologic (blood) and oncologic (cancer) disorders. The center offers:

  • Inpatient and outpatient services in the same area to provide seamless care
  • Rooms dedicated to bone marrow and immune deficiency inpatients
  • An expanded number of treatment and consultation rooms in the outpatient clinic to minimize waiting times for patients and their families
  • Separate infusion areas for young children and teens for added privacy
  • A large play space
  • Windows overlooking beautiful Forest Park

Specialty services
  • Anemia -- The service aids in the diagnosis and management of anemia, offering consultation on the management of patients with congenital anemias, including sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis, and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. The division is also a leading NIH-funded center for clinical trials on the natural history and management of pediatric sickle cell disease, including novel therapies such as hydroxyurea and Flocor. Chronic transfusion therapy is provided to select patients.

  • Neutropenia -- Evaluation and assistance in the management of congenital and acquired causes of neutropenia, including benign neutropenia of childhood, congenital agranulocytosis, and drug-induced neutropenia.

  • Thrombocytopenia -- Evaluation and management of patients with ITP and other causes of thrombocytopenia.

  • Coagulation -- Diagnosis and aid in the care of patients with bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia and von Willebrandt's disease. Specialized evaluations of individuals predisposed to thrombosis.

  • Leukemia and lymphoma -- Diagnosis and management of patients with acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Staff memebers are active participants in Children's Oncology Group (COG) protocols for treatment of these malignancies.

  • Brain tumors -- Diagnosis and management of all benign and malignant tumors in both the brain and spinal cord.

  • Solid Tumors -- Diagnosis and management of benign and malignant solid tumors of all parts of the body including Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, osteosarcoma and Ewings Sarcoma.

  • Sickle Cell Disease -- Providing comprehensive care for patients with all forms of Sickle cell anemia.
