ST. LOUIS, July 2, 2004 -- St. Louis Children’s Hospital is among the top pediatric hospitals in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report.

US News award badgeThe report, which hits newsstands Monday, July 5, is based on the hospital’s exemplary reputation among the American Medical Association's board-certified physicians.

St. Louis Children's Hospital was the only pediatric hospital in Missouri to make the list.

"We're excited to receive this prestigious honor," says hospital president Lee Fetter. "Through our affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine, a child in our care has access to the most advanced treatment options pediatric medicine has to offer, including the most sophisticated research and clinical trials being done anywhere in the world."

More than 450 randomly-selected physicians from the American Medical Association responded to the survey, where they were asked to list the top five pediatric hospitals in the country.

St. Louis Children's Hospital was ranked 19th from an original list of 6,012 hospitals.

Researchers with U.S. News say the most successful hospitals follow advanced treatment guidelines. They conduct research that migrates flawlessly to bedsides and take advantage of improvements in imaging, surgical devices and other technologies.

"Thanks to the talents and dedication of our doctors, nurses and staff, St. Louis Children’s Hospital is making a profound difference in patients’ lives through medical innovation, patient care and education," says Fetter. "As we celebrate our 125th anniversary this year, we are looking forward to the next 100 years - years we believe hold the promise of tremendous discovery for curing childhood disease and illness.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital has provided specialized care for children for 125 years. Children’s Hospital is affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine, ranked the second best medical school in the country by US News & World Report. In 2003, Child magazine ranked St. Louis Children’s Hospital sixth on its list of the 10 Best children’s hospitals in the country, and fourth in neonatology/neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
