| Pediatric Cancer Survivors Quilt to be Unveiled |
| 9/14/2005 |
One year ago, hundreds of St. Louis Children's Hospital cancer survivors gathered at a rooftop party in their honor. The "Celebrate Life" party recognized all the brave children who've battled - and are still battling -- pediatric cancer and its late effects. It reunited kids with old friends and caregivers, and provided doctors and nurses a much appreciated opportunity to spend time with the children outside the hospital environment.
Among the activities at the event was the opportunity for each child to design a square for a giant survivor's quilt. Each square depicts each child's individual personality and personal journey from cancer treatment to triumph. After a year of heartfelt handiwork, volunteers have stitched those stories together into one collective symbol of survivorship. Patients and staff all agree, the finished product is a masterpiece, and will proudly hang on the wall of the St. Louis Children's Hospital cancer clinic after a hanging ceremony Friday, September 16. The event coincides with National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. |
