St. Louis Children's Hospital Joins Consortium to Find Cures for Cancer

St. Louis Children’s Hospital has been approved to rejoin the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a consortium of US and Canadian medical centers that performs pediatric cancer therapy trials.

Children’s has participated with the consortium in the past, and reapplied earlier this year. St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the only hospital from Missouri in the consortium and one of only a couple in the Midwest.

Dr. Robert Hayashi, a pediatric oncologist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and associated professor at Washington University School of Medicine, will be the principal investigator with Children’s. He will help conduct Phase 1 trials of several cancer-fighting drugs.

“Our selection to this consortium will offer hope to kids in Missouri and surrounding states who would not have access to cancer therapy trials due to their location,” says Dr. Hayashi.

The trials will address pediatric brain tumors, leukemia and neuroblastomas.

There are approximately 250 pediatric cancer centers in the US and Canada.
