What is cleft hand?

Cleft hand, also called central deficiency, is a congenital birth defect in which a child has missing fingers or a deformity of the hand. In most cleft hand cases, the middle finger is missing and the index finger and thumb are webbed.

An orthopedist can diagnosis a hand cleft based on a physical examination. Treatment for cleft hand includes improving the function and appearance of the hand through orthopedic surgery.
