Vascular Access Team
Since its inception in 2006, the Vascular Access (VA) Team has been a valuable resource and clinical support for patients with IV and vascular access needs. These skilled RNs provide family-focused care for inpatients and outpatients. They not only perform difficult IV insertions and phlebotomy but serve as patient advocates by identifying the need for longer term intra-venous access, thus reducing the number of needle sticks a patient may have to endure. If identified as a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) candidate, the line is inserted and managed by the highly trained and experienced Vascular Access Team. State-of-the-art ultrasound technology is used for PICC insertions and for some particularly challenging IV insertions. Once inserted, the VA Team will care for and maintain the PICCs while the patient is hospitalized. Other roles of the VA Team include troubleshooting central venous catheters, treating occlusions and repairing catheters. The VA Team strives to use “ouchless” methods for IV insertions, reduce the number of overall sticks a child must receive and provide safe and consistent care to all patients.
Providing education to patients and families is also a top priority for the VA Team. Information and knowledge can ease some of the stress for families suddenly faced with caring for a vascular access device. Resources are available through the VA Team in conjunction with the Family Resource Center, including teaching tools, diagrams and evidence-based research articles.
Patient Population
The population served by the Vascular Access Team consists of patients from newborn to age twenty-one. The team provides care to patients from all units who require vascular access assistance.
