Camp Oasis Gives Children with IBD the Chance to be "Just Kids"
The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Camp Oasis provides children dealing with these chronic illnesses an opportunity to be “just kids” in a camp focused on their particular needs. Children attending the camp participate in activities that include:
- Swimming, boating and fishing
- Visual and performing arts
- Ropes course, archery and outdoor adventure
- Individual and team sports
- Special events
In addition, the camp provides:
- 24-hour on-site medical supervision by volunteer physicians and nurses from St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH), and other health care professionals with experience treating children with IBD.
- Dedicated and understanding counselors, many of whom have IBD themselves, who are carefully screened and trained.
- An environment where campers realize they are not alone in their struggles and can let their true selves shine.
This year’s camp will be held August 7 – 11, 2011, at the YMCA of the Ozarks, Camp Lakewood, located in Potosi, Missouri. Children eligible to attend the camp are those entering grades 3-10 in 2011, and Leaders in Training entering grades 11 or 12 in 2011.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for children with IBD to enjoy themselves with others who are dealing with the same challenges,” says Robert Rothbaum, MD, clinical director of gastroenterology/nutrition at SLCH and camp medical director. “We urge physicians to encourage their patients to attend so these children can experience both the fun and camaraderie that develop in this setting.”
The application deadline for the camp is June 1, 2011, and the fee is $100. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) offers reduced fees for families in financial need. Parents may apply on line at CCFA.org/camps.
