Heart Heroes
Meet Kenny in housekeeping at St. Louis Children's Hospital, and hear what he does to help our heart disease patients.
Every year we celebrate National Nurses Week to recognize the dedication of our nurses, who are nearly one-third of the hospital's staff. The finale of the annual celebration is the announcement of the annual Nancy A. Ross, RN, Nursing Award winners. Two of the award winners this year are from Cardiology. Their photo and an except from their nomination are below. They are Heart Heroes every day.
Partner in Caring AwardMildred Madison, 7 West
Mildred often goes above and beyond in her duties on the 7 West unit. To be quite specific, back in the summertime she was an amazing care giver. Although the care of this patient involved multiple time-consuming challenges, Mildred never ceased to show true compassion for him. As his sitter she was able to calm him down, control his behavior with her words and actions, and really made a significant difference in his stay here at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
She picked up extra shifts, knowing that he was difficult to staff for and also knowing that while she was there he was better. Words cannot describe how caring she was to him and all the hard work she put in. Mildred has continued to show a true compassion for the unit, the hospital and our patients. She is eager to step up and help in any way she can and often finds ways we can be more efficient and productive.
Excellence in MentoringBonita Leiber, BSN, RN, 7 West
Bonita has been a nurse at St. Louis Children's Hospital for 35 years yet has the energy and drive of a new graduate. She loves to share her knowledge with students and staff alike. She has been a mentor to several students, externs and staff. Most importantly she is a huge resource for her fellow staff nurses.
Bonita has so much wisdom to share and is always willing to do so. She is approachable and has a lighthearted, fun attitude.
She puts patients and families first. She organized several activities on the unit for our patients - for example, Halloween costume parties, arts and crafts, birthday parties and more.
