During the inpatient rehab stay, our teachers at St. Louis Children's Hospital are in regular communication with teachers at the patient's school. We want to help children keep up with school work whenever possible and get them ready to return to school after going home. The goal of the school reentry program is to ease the transition of the patient back to school. We strive to help teachers and classmates understand changes that have occurred with the child and new supports they may need in school.
Team members include: Therapists, School Teacher, Social Worker, Child Life Specialist
The school reentry team develops an individualized, age-appropriate presentation for the patient’s classmates and teachers. The presentation includes information regarding:
- patient’s diagnosis and reason for hospitalization
- patient’s goals and progress in therapies
- patient’s school adaptation needs
Sometimes the school reentry team goes to the patient's school to help with the transition.
