Support for Families
All patients referred to the Bone Marrow Transplant program are introduced during the initial pre-transplant evaluation to a multidisciplinary team consisting of a nurse coordinator, social worker, child life specialist, staff psychologist, school liaison, and hospital chaplain.
This not only provides an opportunity to initiate our extensive educational program, but it also allows us to address the emotional, spiritual, and financial needs of each individual family. The members of this team will continue to follow patients throughout the hospital stay, offering assurance that every family will have full preparation and support for the challenges that lie ahead in their child's care.
The program's transplant coordinator has a significant role in this process. In addition to orchestrating the overall functions of the team, the coordinator educates families about what to expect, explaining the transplant process, potential complications, and infection control issues.
