When a child with heart disease comes to St. Louis Children's Hospital for medical and surgical treatment, the child benefits from a world-class team of pediatric cardiac specialists and health-care professionals. Nevertheless, family members have questions and concerns. Whether your child is having testing, a cardiac catheterization or cardiac surgery, the division will be happy to answer your questions about your child's care.

St. Louis Children's Hospital formed its cardiology division in 1950. At that time the treatment of heart disease in young children was not a broad medical specialty, and involved mainly the care of patients with rheumatic heart disease. Today, cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons treat complex congenital heart defects using techniques that were considered impossible just a decade ago.

St. Louis Children's Hospital's cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery divisions provide treatment and surgery for all pediatric heart problems. The division is nationally recognized as a leading pediatric heart transplantation center and performs 15-20 heart transplants each year. The division also offers a full array of diagnostic techniques, many of which are noninvasive and were either developed or perfected at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital recently unveiled a state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) to care for the most critically ill cardiac patients.  From newborns to young adults, the 12-bed unit provides every patient and family a private room.
