Surgery: What to Expect
After consultation with one of the pediatric epilepsy surgeons, a surgery may be offered. There will be plenty of time to discuss the details of surgery at this appointment; bringing a list of questions for the surgeon prepared in advance may be helpful.
In most cases your child will arrive at the hospital the morning of surgery. Expect a phone call 1-2 days in advance of surgery with specific instructions regarding preparation for surgery (arrival time, diet, etc.). In general, we recommend:
- A bath and shampoo on the evening before surgery
- Nothing should be taken by mouth after midnight the night before surgery, except for the usual anticonvulsant medications with a small sip of water if necessary
The morning of surgery you will meet the pediatric anesthesia team, when you will discuss the plan for anesthesia tailored to your child’s needs and preferences.
