The Helen E. Nash, MD, Professorship in Pediatrics will honor the memory of one of St. Louis Children’s most accomplished and beloved physicians. A pioneering leader in neonatal care, Dr. Nash was known for her strength and conviction in every aspect of her work – whether she was establishing new standards and training for premature infant care, working to reduce teen pregnancy through education or developing holistic treatment methods to address children’s social and emotional health.
Thanks to donor support, the incredible compassion, determination and enthusiasm for medicine embodied by Dr. Nash will live on through the next generation of pediatric changemakers.
An endowed chair is more than just a designation, title or name on a plaque. In the coming years, the Helen E. Nash, MD, Professorship in Pediatrics will be held by distinguished physician-scientists who live out the values and principles that Dr. Nash championed throughout her career.
Dr. Helen E. Nash broke barriers across the medical field while serving as a tireless advocate for three generations of St. Louis children. In 1949, she became the first African American woman to join both the attending staff at St. Louis Children’s and the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine. She held both positions for over 40 years, acting as an invaluable mentor to minority students and clinicians.
Together, St. Louis Children’s and Washington University School of Medicine attract some of the brightest minds in medicine – as both educators and practitioners. However, competition to attract and retain that talent can be fierce. Only through support from donors like you are we able to continue funding endowed chairs that bring the nation’s top physicians to St. Louis.
Please join us in celebrating Dr. Nash’s legacy through the creation of the Helen E. Nash, MD, Professorship in Pediatrics. Your gift will help create an endowment of $2 million that will support the work of Allison King, MD, PhD — and others who will sustain this legacy in perpetuity.
