Spoehrer Scholarship Presentation

On June 19, 2008 the Friends Board gathered in the Edison Dining Room to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Jane Spoehrer Memorial Scholarship. The Spoehrer Scholarship was established by the Friends to honor the commitment and dedication of Jane Spoehrer to volunteerism. Each year, the Friends recognize and award the Jane Spoehrer Scholarship to dedicated and deserving youth for their volunteer commitments to SLCH.

This year’s recipients are two extremely talented, enthusiastic and dedicated young adults, Emilee Burns and Mikel Ollech. Emilee has worked at Children’s Hospital for five consecutive summers and has accumulated 192 volunteer hours. She is attending Rockhurst University in Kansas City.

Mikel has been volunteering for over a year at SLCH and has accumulated 75 volunteer hours. Mikel is attending Lincoln Land Community College.

Several members of the Spoehrer family attended the ceremony including Jane’s daughters, Susan Elliot and Sally Lemkemeier. Also on hand to celebrate the scholarship’s anniversary were eight past recipients, several of whom continue to work for St. Louis Children’s Hospital in various capacities.

If you are a high-school senior who has volunteered at Children’s Hospital and would like to apply for this scholarship, please contact Jill Mechler in the Volunteer office at 454.2029 for more details.

Jefferson City Trip

Each year, Friends members join Children's Hospital staff for a trip to Jefferson City, MO to talk with legislators about policies and ballot initiatives. Your voice as a volunteer and voter makes a difference.

No experience is required. Talking points are provided prior to the trip and we practice the buddy system when speaking with politicians. For more information please contact Abby at 314.286.1549.

Love Light Festival
Being in the hospital is no child's idea of a magical holiday, but the Friends work hard to bring fun and joyful memories to kids in the hospital during this special time. The Love Light Festival features food, holiday music and entertainment from local sports professionals, celebrities, costumed characters and other performers. Santa and Mrs. Claus deliver goodies and gifts to all patients, while family members enjoy a festive meal. The evening ends with an inspiring ceremony and the lighting of the hospital's thousands of twinkling holiday lights.

Hundreds of gifts for children of all ages are needed each year. If you are interested in being a part of this amazing outreach please contact Carolyn Allen at 314.286.0972.
