Give your child the gift of safety this year by taking precautions to ensure the holiday is accident free.
The holiday season is a festive time of year. Unfortunately, it is also a time when holiday cooking and decorations can lead to burn injuries in children. Taking extra precautions can help keep kids safe while they take part in holiday activities.
Cooking Up Trouble?
Allowing children to help you cook during the holidays can be a great bonding experience. However, hot surfaces can pose some threats to your child’s safety.
When children are helping you in the kitchen, never leave them unsupervised. Use back burners whenever possible and keep all handles turned inward so children don’t accidentally pull hot pans off the stove. Also, never hold a child while cooking or carrying hot
items, and don’t carry containers of hot liquid when children are underfoot.
Look, but Don’t Touch
The kitchen isn’t the only potentially harmful area in the home around the holidays. Keep these tips in mind to prevent burns that may occur throughout your home.
- Use cool-burning lights for decorations.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Store lighters and matches where children cannot reach them.
- Keep children away from space heaters.
- Don’t allow kids near fireplaces. Even with a barrier in place, children can easily burn their hands.
