Children’s Direct is a 24/7 immediate link for referring physicians when they need to admit a patient, dispatch the hospital's transport team, obtain urgent or routine consultations, schedule appointments with specialists, or request patient information.
Admitting or transporting a patient
- Upon calling Children’s Direct, the referring physician will speak to a pediatric nurse or facilitator.
- The nurse immediately arranges a conference call with the referring physician, an accepting physician at St. Louis Children's, and the call facilitator.
- Together, they develop a plan for the transfer and admission.
- Patient information is documented, so that the team is prepared and ready upon the patient's arrival.
- The WashU Medicine physician at St. Louis Children’s provides medical oversight of the patient by phone during the transport.
- Referring physicians will be notified when their patient is admitted to the hospital.
- When a referring physician calls Children’s Direct, they receive updates about their patient’s care from the St. Louis Children’s team.
Additional Children’s Direct services
- Urgent consultation requests with WashU Medicine specialists are made within minutes of receiving a call.
- Physicians’ staff members can also call and schedule patient appointments with our attending physicians.
- Children's Direct facilitators will set up the appointment, follow-up with the referring physicians’ office, and contact the patient’s family with further instructions.
