Healthy Kids Express mobile care unlocks access to world-class care for children and families throughout the St. Louis region, enabling our teams of healthcare professionals to expand their expertise beyond hospital doors.
Our mobile care focuses on asthma care, dental services, diabetes support and preventable screenings. What began as screenings and dental outreach in 2000 has now grown into five mobile units, expanded virtual care and referrals to Community Health Workers to connect families with vital resources and assistance.
This initiative delivers free, expert care directly to schools and neighborhoods across St. Louis, ensuring children in underserved communities get the care they need, right where they are.
Asthma & Preventative Screening Programs
Healthy Kids Express has performed more than 200,000 screenings for lead, anemia, hearing and vision—in addition to providing more than 1,300 immunizations per year. Through free health services, education and lifesaving medical equipment, the asthma program helps approximately 750 students per school year manage their care. Of all families in the Asthma Coach program, 77% followed up with their doctors or specialists within a year.
Dental Program
No other program in our region provides free, comprehensive dentistry for St. Louis’ most underserved populations. With the addition of a second mobile unit in January 2024, we served more than 1,300 children at 17 schools and 22 community sites. Of our 462 treated cases, 83% had six or less cavities thanks to an increase in children’s dental knowledge.
Diabetes Program
The first mobile pediatric diabetes specialty care unit in the nation provides the same high-quality services offered in a traditional clinic, including lab work and screenings for complications. We partner with 54 community and school sites across the region and WashU Medicine’s Endocrinology Department. We saw an increase of 146 clinical sessions in 2023 to 399 encounters in 2024. Through education and clinical care, 72% of patients served had a stable or improved A1C blood sugar measurement.
