Respiratory issues, including infections, asthma, and severe allergic reactions, are the primary reasons for most emergency department visits in children and teens. In fact, the incidence of asthma has risen 150% over recent decades, especially in underserved populations.
Unfortunately, we have limited insight into the reasons underlying this reality. There is little understanding of how socioeconomic or health conditions may affect asthma and other respiratory issues. The vast majority of therapies for respiratory issues are based on how adults with these conditions are treated, which has led to a very generalized and broad approach within pediatric health care.
The Center for Pediatric Pulmonary Disease and Asthma aims to advance necessary breakthroughs and help develop better, more personalized treatments and interventions.
Donate to The Center for Pediatric Pulmonary Disease and Asthma
By tapping into expertise at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and WashU Medicine, we will gain a deeper understanding of the biological causes behind pediatric pulmonary disorders. We will provide research opportunities to the next generation of physician-scientists, encourage research that leads to clinical trials, and collaborate with health care partners to improve asthma care.
The insights we uncover will fuel the development of more targeted and precise treatments—which we can rapidly translate into pilot clinical trials, research grants, and more.
With your help, the Center for Pulmonary Disease and Asthma will lead innovation in pulmonary medicine, implementing the best and most personalized care possible for patients in our region, nation, and around the world.
