What is hand hygiene?
Hand hygiene refers to the process of cleaning hands with either soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Why we measure hand hygiene:
- We want to do what’s right for kids, visitors, and staff.
- Good hand hygiene ensures safe care and a healthy environment.
- Staff and patients can evaluate how compliant the hospital is with following hand hygiene protocol.
Our data
Steps we take to encourage good hand hygiene:
- All staff are required to review appropriate hand hygiene practices annually.
- This annual review details the most critical moments to perform hand hygiene to reduce the risk of infections.
- Hand sanitizer dispensers have been updated so that staff and patients have easy to access to them throughout our facilities.
What can families do to encourage good hand hygiene?
- Ask your health care team to perform hand hygiene if you don’t see them do it.
- Practice good hand hygiene yourself and encourage all visitors to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer.
- Help your child to wash their hands, especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat a meal.
- Some children may be able to use hand sanitizer if they are unable to wash their hands.
