The only center of its kind

The Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the only center in the region to offer multidisciplinary care for transgender, non-binary or genderqueer children, adolescents and young adults.

Gender affirming care

We’re not here to tell anyone what to do or how to express their gender. Instead, we talk with each patient about their options and help figure out what’s in their best interest.

This approach, called gender affirming care, is the gold standard of pediatric gender care. Research shows that when kids and young adults receive support that upholds their gender identity, they have better health outcomes. Not receiving that support puts their physical and mental health at risk.

Options to fit each patient’s needs

Our team knows that each person has different goals, needs and interests when they come to the Transgender Center. We offer many innovative treatments and services to meet each patient’s individual needs and desires. These include psychosocial support, voice and speech therapy, and more.

Comprehensive healthcare for transgender kids and young adults

In addition to helping patients transition, if they want to, we offer comprehensive healthcare and mental health services. Our team includes a range of specialists who focus on treating transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming and genderqueer kids and young adults.

Support at every step

We provide patients and their families with comprehensive support services and resources, including:

  • Case manager who helps connect patients and families to community resources.
  • Educational liaison who helps kids with support for gender affirmation in schools.
  • Resources to help patients who want to legally change their name or gender marker
  • Precertification coordinator who can work with you to you understand which services are covered by insurance

Community engagement

We’re proud to be part of the St. Louis LGBTQ+ community and participate in a variety of advocacy organizations. We’re happy to help you and your family participate in the community, too. We can refer you to resources and support groups in St. Louis and beyond, and discuss which ones might best meet your needs.
