Our faculty take a developmental and competency-based approach to supervision so that it aligns with the fellow’s skill level and needs. All training experiences involve some direct observation and individualized feedback to increase competence and independence in clinical practice.

Fellows are supervised by different faculty throughout the year depending on clinical rotations, and receive a minimum of two hours of individual supervision each week. Fellows and their supervisors set goals that are monitored and assessed throughout the rotation. Our program is designed to meet the postdoctoral supervised practice requirements for licensure in the state of Missouri, and fellows obtain provisional licensure in Missouri at the beginning of the training year.

Opportunities for fellows to lead supervision are also available, such as supervising graduate practicum students in the craniofacial and cleft palate clinic. Fellows will receive supervision of their supervisory work.

Fellows regularly meet with the training director on an individual basis to discuss progress in the program and for professional development mentoring. For the first month of the training year, all fellows will meet with the training director.

Fellows are provided formal written feedback at three-month intervals (midway and at the end of rotations). Informal verbal feedback provided throughout training and in supervision. Fellows also complete formal written evaluations for each supervisor and rotation, in addition to a program evaluation at the end of the year. Should concerns about a fellow’s professionalism or competency arise, the fellowship program follows established due process and grievance procedures. Fellows are provided with information about expected competencies, evaluation processes, and due process and grievance procedures during orientation to fellowship.
