When managing your family’s screen time during the summer months, it’s important to set healthy boundaries. Mini Tandon, DO, provides insight on how your family can work together to set appropriate limits on screen time.

First, choose a set time limit for media devices by duration (for example, the longest anyone can be on a device is two hours per day), or a specific time each day (such as, all devices are turned in to the parents or caregivers by 8:30 p.m.).

Secondly, set context-driven screen limits (for example, no one is allowed screen time during family dinner). Having your family set screen limit rules together can be helpful because it gives everyone a sense of ownership. Additionally, use screen time as a reward for completing chores or summer learning.

Setting screen time limits now can help prevent problems associated with excessive media use.
